Summary

When Super Mario Land was released in 1990, courtesy of Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo had once again proved nigh on unbeatable in the platform genre with the continuing Mario franchise. Developed in 1992, Super Mario Land 2 was a long awaited follow up set alongside Nintendo’s concurrent production of Super Mario World on SNES. While people wondered what impact this significant change in game style would have on its game-play, Nintendo were finishing what was to be yet another classic.

Introducing the evil villain, Wario for the first time, Super Mario Land 2 has a vastly altered but improved progress structure. Levels are now spread across a giant playing world that loses Mario Land 2 some of the linearity that is traditional to platform games. This isn’t a bad thing, since you now have to wander the main world map in search of the six golden coins, choosing, to some extent, the way you progress.

What’s more, for a sequel produced just two years after the first instalment, there are some vastly improved visuals that give the game a truly fresh and individual feel. Different areas of the game are now easily distinguished from each other. Your travels will take you through shark-infested lakes, to the newly introduced haunted locations of the Mario Universe. In addition to the vast number of new features, a new control system has been implemented, making Mario much easier to control. The easier the character is to control, the more pleasing the game is to play.

There is no doubt that this particular successor will have the same levels of success that Super Mario 3 had over its predecessor. Mario Land 2 is worth every penny, it’s a pleasure to play, and we can only look forward to future Mario productions.
