Summary

Nintendo mascot and superstar Mario is starring in his very own role-playing game. Paper Mario for the Nintendo 64 is a top rate, if slightly bizarre platform/adventure title.

As the name suggests, all of the characters in this game look like 2D cardboard cut-outs. But don’t think for a second that Paper Mario is not a 3D game. Although you can’t control the camera, you can run into and out of the screen.

The visuals are colourful, stylised and are definitely guaranteed to brighten up your day. Because Paper Mario is aimed as a ‘my first RPG’ experience, the gameplay is easy to learn and as you acquire new skills and abilities, the game will explain how to use them. As you make your way through the adventure you will come across various enemies that need disposing of. Once you are challenged, the game switches to side-on, turn-based fight sequences where you have select your attacks and who to target.

You only have a certain amount of hit points and attack points, so be careful in your battles. Luckily, both areas can be refreshed with items or sleep. As with most RPG’s, successful victories earn you experience which will eventually boost your stats.

Paper Mario has a great story and addictive gameplay. Would you expect anything less from a Mario title? Overall, another superb Nintendo game.
