Summary

Who can resist cute anime girls battling the forces of evil? Hyperdimension Neptunia takes you on an intergalactic ride through the tunnel of kawaii and into the land of ‘onegaishimasu!’ - but with a twist. Instead of human beings, you actually control humanoid form of computer hardware. Neptunne herself is a video game console that is on a mission to battle the evil illegal hardware of the universe.

Industry send-ups aside, it’s not so uncommon in Japan to see this sort of thing happen in manga and various fan art websites on the internet. Characters such as PlayStation-tan are quite popular in the Land of the Rising Sun, and here gamers will finally get to see through the eyes of a piece of hardware - or game company - in human form.

As you can imagine, transformation is a big part of Neptunne - think of all the sentai programmes such as Power Rangers with lock-on Mega Zords and skyscraper battles. But before you can change into an ultimate battle machine, you have to fight enemies in normal human mode and collect enough energy to transform. Changing will change your battle stats, along with your appearance and customisation options. Naturally, once you go super-human you won’t want to go back.

A love letter to the games industry on the one hand and Japanese robot battle TV shows on the other, Neptunne features action from the latter and characters that represent the former - familiar names from Sega, Nippon Ichi Software, Gust, Idea Factory and Compile Heart all come together to fight the illegal evil.
