Summary

At this point in time, Mario and Sonic at the 'insert city name here' Olympic Games is practically the official game of the Games, so it won't surprise anyone to see this latest entry gracing their screens to celebrate Rio 2016.

There are 17 Olympic disciplines packed into the game, including a host of sports that put a distinctive Mario and Sonic twist on Olympic events. 2016 also marks the first appearance of Rugby in the Games since 1924, and the event comes exclusively to the Wii U version of the game. Rugby Sevens is one of three sports, along with football and beach volleyball, that comes with a 'Duel Event'. In these special events, everything's powered up with items like Bullet Bills and Chaos Emeralds in play to keep those multiplayer bouts frantic and unpredictable.

The action is played out using a host of familiar faces from the Mario and Sonic franchises, from mainstays such as Yoshi and Amy Rose to 20 faces new to the series such as Rosalina and Rouge, bringing the total number of playable characters up to more than 30!

For those who want to taste the glory themselves, there's the chance for players to arrive in Rio as their Mii and take part in events.
