As insatiable games journalists eagerly await Nintendo’s promised peripheral revolution and the curious ‘Manebito’ camera gadget, In2Games has confirmed that it will be unveiling its own revolutionary motion-tracking system for PC and PS2 at Gamestars Live this September. Unlike standard camera technology such as Sony’s Eyetoy, Gametrak can measure forward and backward motions as well as lateral ones. This innovation opens up a whole new realm of possibilities.
The Gametrak will launch in Europe at the beginning of October, in the form of a peripheral/game bundle costing £69.99. For that, buyers will get a Gametrak, fighting gloves, a foot mat and the PS2 game Dark Wind. Unlike the dark winds that occasionally waft across our office, this one will give you a chance to fight back with a flurry of throat-punches and shin-kicks.
Also confirmed for a Q1 2005 release is Gametrak: Real World Golf. The concept is simple: choose a club and swing it. It’s been a long time in the works, but this is sure to appeal to many people who wouldn’t normally spend their time playing videogames. The sort of people, for example, who play golf. Whether or not Real World Golf could actually serve as a useful training tool for real world golfers will remain to be seen, but it is an interesting possibility.
It does sound intriguing, and with more Motiontrak sports and dancing games in the works, it could definitely catch on. As the In2games press release states, “it has to be seen to be believed.” So in case you don’t believe us, here are a few images.
