Summary

It’s a fact that absolutely everyone in the world is in love with The Simpsons, except George Bush Snr who prefers The Waltons. But, as no Waltons Skateboarding game is being released for PlayStation 2, it looks like he backed the wrong horse.

It is widely accepted that EA’s last Simpsons game, Simpsons Road Rage, was practically a clone of Sega’s seminal Crazy Taxi, albeit featuring the colourful inhabitants of Springfield. Things could have been better, but they could’ve been worse too.

The Simpsons Skateboarding takes a lovingly recreated Springfield and all the best-known characters. You can skate in the Sir Putt-A-Lot miniature golf range, Krusty’s TV studios and even Springfield Gorge, the scene of Homer’s near-fatal first skateboarding experience.

All the nine playable characters included in the game have unique signature moves which, when first encountered, will bring joy to fans of the series. Homer can bust out a Stinkyfish grind and Bart can pop an In Your Dreams kickflip.

The control system is neatly lifted from NeverSoft’s Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series, so there is an immediate feeling of familiarity on offer to anyone adept at virtual board riding.

For fans of the yellow-skinned family, this is a corking little game, and a great mainstream intro to the extreme sports genre. Now, about that Waltons Skateboarding game…Jon-Boy could do the Great Depression Nose Slide!
