Summary

The virtual fishing game, though not as popular as common racers, beat-em-ups or platformers, is now an established genre, largely thanks to the efforts of Sega. But few have tried to create a fishing game that takes a step back from arcade gameplay in an attempt to create a serious and realistic simulator. There are exceptions however, and in this instance, we take a look at Natsume’s Reel Fishing 3 for PS2.

Fishing in the virtual world, as you might expect, is pretty muck like fishing in the real world. Fundamentally, all you have to do is choose your bait, cast your line and wait… then wait some more. The hard part comes in convincing those mean, lean 50-pound fish to bite, and that’s where the skill comes in. And once you have a bite, you then have to reel the struggling fish in without breaking the line. It’s actually very compelling, even as a simulator.

Reel Fishing 3 features some 20 underwater locales from all over the world, offering varying seasons and weather conditions to create a vibrant and convincing game world. Amidst the eye-candy though, a fishing game awaits. There are more than 30 types of fresh water fish available to catch including the Black Bass, King Salmon and Steal Head, and a massive collection of more than 150 fishing tackle. Bait includes flies and lures and it’s up to the player to make an informed decision.

Reel Fishing 3 is a comprehensive fishing simulator, with a variety of options and freedom to adopt your own strategies. Good Stuff.
