Summary

Fears is an early and fairly accomplished attempt to create a Doom clone for the Amiga. Graphically it's has some interesting effects, but like many other Amiga Doom-clones it relies on the Copper to create the environment, resulting in an extremely low-res affair. Still, this is in no way terminal, as other titles such as Gloom or Alien Breed 3D testify.

The levels designs are occasionally interesting and challenging, but too regularly an overzealous side-step will see the player fall into a pit from which there is no escape; a cardinal sin in the big book of level design. On a very minor positive note, most pits contain toxic materials, so it isn't too long before a life is lost and you're back to (relatively) safe place.

Sadly, the enemy would be more at home in a cartoon, with their characature-esque features. Coupled with their pitiful AI, this seriously diminishes the tension created by the design, acoustics and graphics throughout the rest of the game.

Overall, Fears isn't bad, but it could have been much better. With some polishing, the alien and level design, gameplay and AI could have been greatly improved to produce a great game instead of an okay game.
