Summary

The 16-bit era of the video games industry was arguably one of the greatest times in its history. It was a time when many classics were released and the population of video game genres was well balanced. When PlayStation was released in 1995, all was about to change, and the beat-em-up and racing genres were first in the line up be to saturated. Hi Octane, one of PlayStation’s earlier racing games, is one of the few games of its type to be released before the genre became exhausted.

Beginning a game is as simple as choosing from one of Hi Octane’s individual crafts - both vehicular and non-vehicular – and selecting a track to race on. There are nine tracks in all to choose from, each one set in uniquely themed locations. After choosing a game mode, whether it be single, championship, clone or death match, you will be ready to challenge your weapon-festooned opponents. Of course, you do have your own firepower that can be collected or strengthened along the way. The inclusion of weapons in Hi Octane allows players to formulate strategies that aren’t usually part of this type of game. Unusually, the track design of each level is quite original in that you are given the freedom to take on any one of the races' available routes.

Hi Octane isn’t one of the most polished games available for the platform by any means, but the inclusion of a two-player split-screen option means the game has a little more to offer than some.
