Summary
Metroid's simple graphics hid a surprisingly complex adventure. The game takes place across a single, sprawling network of caves rather than a series of discrete stages, which was both unusual and innovative in 1986.
The game's password system generates unique codes that allow players to begin their adventure almost from where they left off. Unfortunately, the lack of any cohesive devices such as maps or mission objectives forced players to rely on their own memory or, all too often, the Nintendo Hotline or player's guidebook, making Metroid a steep and often directionless challenge.
