Summary

When the Playstation was launched in Europe, there were only a handful of games available. One that made a huge impact was Wipeout.
The Saturn version followed, with similarly high sales to their Playstation counterpart, the blend of racing and shooting being just too much to resist for people trying to justify their choice of platform at a time when rivalry was almost as bad as the Spectrum/C64 days.
With great graphics, incredible speed and a banging soundtrack from Leftfield, Chemical Brothers and Orbital, Wipeout wasn't just a game, it was an event.
This was just as well, because once you actually started playing it, you discovered that the control method left something to be desired and the smallest collisions would stop your ship dead, breaking the flow of an otherwise extremely fast game.
However, despite the shortcomings, Wipeout was a hit, and it spawned a sequel in Wipeout 2097 which corrected the faults in the original, ensuring the series would become a classic.
