Bloody Roar is back on the PlayStation in the most bizarre 3D fighting game seen on the console so far. Originality is the key to innovation and Bloody Roar introduces some cool new twists to the popular beat-em-up genre. How many other fighting games do you know where you transform into a beast mid-battle? Exactly, and thats why Bloody Roar 2 is such a cool game.
The gameplay ideology is simple: the fighter with energy left at the end of the round wins. Match points can be set from one to five and the first to reach the set amount is the victor. Bloody Roar borrows control methods and ideas from Fighting Vipers, Virtua Fighter, Tekken and Street Fighter 2. The way you perform moves and supers will be familiar, quarter circles and double taps are all here. Any character can transform into their beastly alter-ego at any point in the match by pressing the appropriate button. A charged meter bar is required to transform and if you get hit too much you morph back into your normal character. When you are playing as the beast, your moves do more damage and new special moves are available to you. Knowing when to transform can be vital to winning matches.
Because Bloody Roar 2 is a totally 3D game, you can duck into the environment to avoid attacks and bounce your opponent off the walls. The combo engine is flexible and allows you to pull off long and spectacular combinations of moves and specials. You can knock your opponent up in the air, juggle them with a float combo and then jump up to meet them as they fall. Timing is the key. When you complete the game, the end sequence shows some ridiculously hard combos that you will just have to try and master.
Bloody Roar 2 holds its own against Tekken 3 and is an enjoyable single player experience and offers competitive two-player battles. With secret characters, stages and gameplay modifications to unlock, the re-playability factor is high. Another classy fighting game on Sonys console.
