Summary

Wild arcade racer with killer paint jobs! Speed Devils goes in exactly the opposite direction of Gran Turismo's accurately modelled car physics. Instead, racers can bet on the outcomes of races, trying to take account of unexpected events such as tornadoes, alien invasion and giant marauding dinosaurs. Anything can happen in Speed Devils and it usually does.

Because Speed Devils is an arcade style racer, it is effortless to get into and fun to play. Most of the courses are flat out tracks with a few tight technical sections that require handbrake turns. Throughout the courses there are shortcuts that can make your racing life much easier. It is worthwhile to find these sections because they will come in handy on the more difficult races. The track layout is well done and the courses have a nice flow to them.

You can buy parts and upgrades for your chosen vehicles to improve its performance. Buying Nitro boosts is expensive but having a massive speed surge down the straight can make of the difference between winning and losing. The cars aren’t real but look like combinations of proper motorcars. Beware of the awesome, pure speed of the difficult to unlock, high-performance cars. Sometimes you forget to breathe as you grit your teeth flying down a long straight, in a nitro boosting fast car, no car please no, as you secretly wish you’d upgraded your brakes as well.

The graphics in Speed Devils deserve a mention, as they are fantastic. The backgrounds are extremely detailed and the frame rate is smooth as a baby’s behind. The control method is well implemented and makes the game a joy to play. A another quality racing game for the Dreamcast.
