Summary

Every so often a video game is produced, usually by a large industry player, that sets the benchmark for quality in its genre. When discussing survival horror games, Resident Evil is often the starting point of the conversation. Why? Because it’s the best game of its kind. Keen to get a word in, Jaleco has produced Carrier, the next in the line up of horror games.

Taking place aboard an aircraft carrier, Carrier immediately inflicts a sense of fear and claustrophobia upon the player. After an organism named ARK breaks loose within the ship, the crew suddenly find themselves being transformed into something more sinister than your average zombie. It’s up to Jack Ingles (you) to solve the mystery, survive, and eradicate the threat. Sound familiar? Nevertheless, in terms of atmospheric value, Carrier doesn’t disappoint.

From the outset, Carrier maintains two different gameplay styles throughout the game. One is to solve puzzles in order to progress; a typical, but necessary inclusion. The other is to blow the heads off the bad guys before you are eaten alive. Unfortunately for you, these creatures often hide themselves in their hosts’ bodies until they are close enough to devour you whole. Thankfully, the game’s most useful item, the scope, is at hand. With this, you will be able to differentiate a surviving human from a mindless flesh eater – hopefully. Essentially, that’s all there is to it.

It’s a nice try from Jaleco, but if it were to be put alongside the Capcom classic, there wouldn’t be much competition. That’s not to say it’s a bad game, but there are better products out there.
