Summary

Space Invaders is a classic game and introduced many people to their first video game experience. Space Invaders was a mesmerising game that was not only enjoyable, but strangely addictive. You were pitted as Earth’s last line of defence in an attempt to destroy the alien warships before it was too late. The essence of the shoot-em-up was captured, avoid the lasers, time your shots, and employ your strategy for victory. The sound was hypnotic, memorable and the tempo was gradually raised as the action became more frantic. As the speed of the game increased, your timing had to compensate before the last ship came crashing into your base.

Space Invaders for the GameBoy Color is a great version of this game. The addictive qualities are still there, but introduced are new gameplay features that add to the longevity of the title. You now have a choice of three ships with varying characteristics. Your ships also feature a three-level shield design to protect you from attacks. When your shield is fully powered up, a secondary lateral attack becomes available. The ships that hover above the attackers now release power-ups that can be of great help. These can range from trident missiles to the devastating maximum shot.

With a great formula that is now portable, Space Invaders is perfectly suited to the hand-held platform.
