Summary

While Nintendo is famous for its 3D achievements on Nintendo 64 with Mario 64 and Zelda 64, the company also has extensive knowledge with 2D games. So why not combine the two? Funnily enough, Nintendo has done just that with the release of Kirby 64 for Nintendo 64.

Adapting a pseudo 3D technique, similar to the likes of Crash Bandicoot and Pandemonium, the game as a platformer is a 3D side-on scrolling affair. You assume the role of Kirby himself, a pink ball of air, in a quest to defeat Dark Matter once again.

The game structure is simple; reach the end of a level and defeat the boss to proceed to the next area of the game. As you progress the story line will be updated, keeping you filled in on the goings on in Kirby land. But it is innovation in gameplay that makes Kirby 64 amazing. On first appearance, Kirby 64 seems to be all about jumping across platforms and avoiding the enemy. However, the enemies within these levels must be used to reach further stages of the game. Kirby’s ability allows him to either blow or swallow his enemies. Blowing enemies can crumble barriers within the levels, while swallowing them will allow him to gain temporary abilities. Swallow a fireball, for example, and you can breathe fire.

Nintendo’s ability to implement simple ideas into a video game and turn them into highly playable games is astonishing. Kirby 64 is a fantastic game that appeals to a young audience, but is challenging to everyone.
