Nintendo has always known when its onto a good thing. Although traditionally known for their expertise with the Mario franchise, Pokemon has come up trumps in recent years. Continuing to push the franchise to a Poke-hungry population, Nintendo has produced Pokemon Puzzle League for Nintendo 64. As a puzzle game, the success of this game will be well recognised in Nintendos home territory, but the European version looks equally appetising. Typical to Pokemon, the Puzzle League features all characters and themes from the games and TV series. Appearances include Ash, a plethora of Pokemon, Misty, and even shut-eyed Brock.
A typical game consists of the player aiming to line up three blocks of the same colour to burst them. Blocks can be lined up either horizontally or vertically, but what makes Puzzle League different from its Tetris and Columns counterparts is how the blocks make their way onto the screen. Instead of falling on top of the existing pile, they push their way up from underneath. As a consequence, you are helpless to influence the starting position of the blocks. To progress, you must learn to swap two adjacent blocks, thus, aligning them with other identical blocks.
Game options include endurance, puzzle solving and tournament. To become a true Puzzle League master, you must defeat the fifteen Pokemon trainers and earn their badges to prove your worth.
