Summary

So you think that the Dreamcast is becoming the home of quality driving games? If so you would be right, moving alongside Ferrari 355, Metropolitan Street Racer and Daytona USA 2001 is Vanishing Point. This is an arcade style racer with real cars like Gran Turismo, excellent.

Initially, Vanishing Point is slightly disappointing; you only have a choice of two poor handling cars and one track to race them on. If you take the time to persevere you will find an abundance of gameplay wealth and depth. The championship mode is where you unlock additional tracks and cars, so it is advised that you spend a lot of time in this mode first.

Vanishing Point is slightly different from most racing games because you race against other competitors on civilian roads, this means that you have to avoid traffic while trying to set the best time on a course. There is also a stunt mode and rally mode to add gameplay variety. Stunts include a long jump event and timed chicane negotiation, and the rally mode is single timed laps with no other cars on the circuit.

Vanishing Point has an Internet option where you can download new challenges and tournaments from Acclaim’s website. By competing with other people’s times you can judge how good you are compared to the rest of the world.

When you drive the faster, better handling cars Vanishing Point stands out as being a enjoyable, competent racing game. There is plenty of challenge here in both the single and two-player games. Vanishing Point is graphically impressive, it features good car modelling and physics, and solid gameplay.
