Summary

The futuristic racing game has landed once again in the form of Space Haste for PC. Following the past successes of the three wipEout games, Space Haste gives the Psygnosis classics a run for their money. This really is high-octane racing action at its best.

As a futuristic racer, Space Haste is set in a completely original series of landscapes. The game has been rendered in full 3D and is best played in a third-person perspective. The setting for these races is mostly dark, but intermittently colourful and beautifully rendered nonetheless.

Now, here’s where the game gets interesting. Yes, there are a number of vehicles to race, a host of tracks, and some nasty opponents, but there’s something else. Here, your driving is rewarded with speed, a unique aspect to Space Haste. Basically, the game measures how well you are performing in a race. It recognises how well you are taking corners and how consistent your driving is. Driving well will result in a higher maximum speed for your vehicle. Theoretically, there is no maximum speed for the racers, but as your maximum speed increases, your reaction time decreases. As a consequence, your maximum speed will reduce. It is this method of gameplay that helps to maintain the pace of the race and keep the game constantly challenging.

Space Haste is a well-balanced game that offers a challenge to suit any skill level. Superb.
