Summary
Xicat’s Iron Aces, originally released for Dreamcast, offered a more than adequate flight simulator experience without complicating gameplay and bombarding the player with complex controls. It was only a matter of time before a sequel appeared and, casting aside all thoughts of a Dreamcast follow up, Iron Aces 2 pops up on the infinitely more popular, and more importantly 'not doomed' PS2.
Like its predecessor, Iron Aces 2 plunges its players into the battlefield of World War 2, at least at the outset. To start with, you must engage in close-quarters combat in ancient aircraft in a pre-missile era. But as you progress, Iron Aces 2 takes you on an aviation history lesson, taking you right up to today’s fighter planes in a much more advanced and comprehensive simulation.
Spanning some 35 missions, your combat skills will be needed in all areas of land, sea and air combat. Whether you’re shooting bogies or picking off tanks and ships from a distance, Iron Aces 2 covers every possible combat strategy involved with aviation.
Not only that, but it’s been done in the most visually astounding way. Gone are the days of low frame rate simulations usually seen on even the most advanced home PC's. Iron Aces 2 utilises the PS2’s polygon-pushing power brilliantly. There’s also some top-notch animation and modelling and some near photo-realistic texturing, making Iron Aces 2 the most credible flight simulator around. Eat your heart out, Microsoft!
