Summary

The Soul Reaver is back and more twisted than ever before. If you missed the first instalment, imagine the classic Tomb Raider set in a demonic, perplexing world. This is action combined with exploration, with a healthy dose of puzzle solving thrown into the mix for good measure. And let’s not forget the soul-devouring. Oh yes.

Soul Reaver 2 carries on the story from where it left off in the original. Raziel, our hero, has plunged through the Chronoplast time portal to try and track down his nemesis Kain. Raziel must figure out the mysteries of Nosgoth’s ancient races and expose the scheming behind the corruption of the Pillars and the Vampire genocide.

All of the abilities that Raziel gradually learned in the first game he can still perform, such as wall-scaling, swimming, and so on. There are 30 new abilities to learn in the sequel. Naturally, these are presented throughout the course of the game, so there’s no feeling of being overwhelmed with control options.

Soul Reaver’s twist is that Raziel never dies, he flits between the world of the living, the material plane, to the world of the dead, the spectral plane. He can also learn how to make this shift by activating certain icons. Some areas of a level may be inaccessible in one plane, but not in the other. Raziel must shift backwards and forwards between these planes to progress. Very clever.

Soul Reaver 2 improves on nearly every aspect of an already excellent game. The polygon count has tripled, the textures are more detailed, the enemies more intelligent and varied. Most importantly, the puzzles are more challenging, but not impossible to overcome. Soul Reaver 2 is one of the best action-platformers to come along in a long time.
