Summary

Sequel to the top-selling racing game GT Advance Championship Racing, which graced the Game Boy Advance during its infancy, GT Advance 2 places you behind the wheel of the world’s top rally cars, spanning the globe in quest of a championship.

Featuring over 40 unique tracks, play takes place across 14 gruelling stages and spans a multitude of different terrain and weather conditions. 15 cars are available, each offering different attributes and features such as handling, grip, acceleration and top speed.

Each of the 14 worldwide locations features three legs – a certain ranking in each leg must be achieved in order to progress to the next race. Car configurations can be adjusted to suit the relevant track surfaces and conditions, so tyres can be changed for snow levels, for example.

Although similar in design to its predecessor, GT Advance 2 has been subjected to an upgraded 3D engine. Gone is the Mode 7 style, which scaled and rotated the road texture a la Mario Kart and F Zero. This title uses a warping effect to create an illusion of 3D, delivering hills and bumps in the road texture and offering a more realistic look to the proceedings.

With extras such as a navigator who speaks to you throughout the races, optional two player link-up and a battery backed-up save option (a salient point, considering the complaints surrounding the prequel’s omission of such a feature) GT Advance 2 is certainly one of the more accomplished racing titles on the GBA.
