Summary

One of the industry's more obscure Japanese titles, it comes as a surprise that Kotobuki Grand Prix should make it to European shores at all. But thanks to Midas, the mini-motorbike racer has arrived on PlayStation, it's super cheap and it's a good laugh.

There are several bog-eyed and severely deformed characters to play as, all of which have their own background, story and motive for racing in the Kotobuki Grand Prix. But enough of the details, the real fun is in the racing.

Driving around in a Mario Kart-esque environment, each race takes place in a single city, in which you must compete against seven other computer-controlled players. Races are easy to win initially, but the learning curve takes a turn for the worse as computer AI becomes your worst enemy and you fall victim to foul play. Eventually, you'll come to rely not just on driving skill, but on the pick-ups that are littered around each stage to win a race.

It will sound all too familiar to a few million former SNES owners, but Mario Kart was a classic, and a game inspired by Miyamoto's golden touch can't go far wrong.
