Summary
Tying in with the somewhat belated movie sequel is this officially licensed action title from Empire Interactive. As you would expect, Bad Boys II sees you take control of the two bad boys, Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett of the Tactical Narcotics Team, as you play through a series of missions based on scenes from the film.
The story sees the two dudes with attitude assigned to a high tech task force to investigate the flow of designer ecstasy into Miami. Soon enough, their enquiries lead them to a major conspiracy involving a notorious kingpin, whose ambitions to take over the city's drug trade have ignited a bloody turf war.
The game itself is played out in both first and third-person, with you taking control of either character, depending on the respective situation. Mike is the hard man and comes in handy when the action is high and plenty of things/people need blasting to smithereens. On the other hand, Marcus comes into play when a more subtle approach is required, introducing a number of stealth elements to the game.
There are three distinctive play modes on offer, which lend a fair amount of variety to the proceedings. Action Mode, as you may have guessed, demands plenty of quick aiming and shooting, seeing you shoot your way through choreographed gun battles and set pieces, utilising the destructible scenery to take cover when the action is getting too hot. Explore Mode has you moving normally through enemy territory, searching for clues and evidence. Sniper Mode (hooray for snipers!) puts you behind the telescopic sight in order to carry out such objectives as covering your partner or taking out the bad guys from a distance.
With plenty of over-the-top action and huge explosions, Bad Boys II is ideal for a fun and entertaining blast, in much the same way that the film is - if you're a fan, then it's worth a look; if Schindler's List is more your bag, then maybe not.
