Summary
The latest action romp to come off the back of the recent Terminator sequel is Atari's War of the Machines. A PC-only affair, the game takes the form of first-person shooter, placing players at the centre of the well-known battle between man and machine. As the story goes, humanity sits on the brink of extinction and war ravages the land, as hardened Tech-Com fighters defend John Connor and others against the mechanized onslaught of the CRS force.
The game plunges you right in to the very heart of the uprising, presenting you with a variety of missions, set in assorted locations taken directly from the third film. As such, throughout the struggle, you make your way through a number of apocalyptic locales, such as destroyed highways, a ruined ocean harbour, crumbling factories, Tech-Com, and CRS military bases. Throughout the game, a comprehensive storyline sees you take on a variety of roles, including both man and machine - one particular favourite is that of the original Terminator, which features voice and motion-capture courtesy of the newly appointed Governor of California himself.
As you would expect, no game such as this would be complete without a plethora of high-powered weaponry to assist you in your quest - War of the Machines doesn't disappoint, offering a wide range of firepower, also taken from the film, such as a Barrett M82 sniper rifle, a Heckler & Koch G3 assault rifle, an M4A1 carbine, and more. The game also comes complete with a healthy roster of machinery, both in terms of Terminators and vehicles, including the likes of the T900 Endoskeleton, T900a Infiltrator, HK Tank, and FK Hovercraft.
As well as the single-player aspect, War of the Machines is also packed with plenty of multiplayer options, allowing up to 32 players to battle it out over a LAN on the Internet, in a variety of game modes that includes the likes of Team Deathmatch and Domination. With the inclusion of such great combat scenarios as subways, tunnels and burnt-out buildings, this makes for some ideal LAN Party material.
