Summary

In a somewhat refreshing change to your usual Star Trek gaming experiences, which have in the past tended to be fairly complicated affairs, aimed at the more ardent trekkies, Shattered Universe instead opts for the more action-orientated, combat approach. In similar vein to Factor 5's Star Wars-based Rogue Squadron series, the game basically gives you the chance to take to the helm of an assortment of different Star Trek space crafts, explore a Gene Rodenberry-inspired universe, and get down to some frenetic blasting action.

As the game's story goes, Captain Sulu and the crew of the USS Excelsior are accidentally transported into a dangerous mirror universe, in which they become enemies of the Federation, as well as their usual adversaries. Their only hope of escape lies at the end of the obligatory hazardous journey, the result of which will see them battling with their ultimate foes - their own evil counterparts.

Throughout the array of missions you come up against a wide variety of alien races - including Klingons, Romulans, Vulcans, Tholians, and Gorn - as well as a range of artefacts such as the 'Guardian of Forever' (an ancient time portal) and the 'Doomsday machine' (a giant robot ship that consumes planets for fuel). As you engage swarms of enemy fighters and fleets of capital ships, the main task at hand sees you on the hunt to uncover vital resources in order to survive and return to the normal universe.

At your disposal are a total of six different fighters, each with its own unique properties and each with up to three different configurations of weapon load-out, hull strength, shield strength, and speed. Both the fighters and their different configurations can be unlocked as you progress through the game - you begin with just the Imperial Wraith, but soon gain access to the likes of the Imperial Spectre and Phantom, as well as the Klingon Bird of Prey, the Orion Corsair, and the Romulan Shrike. Obviously a massive array of serious space-age weaponry is at your fingertips in each case, including such offensive gear as Phaser Bolts, Plasma Cannons, Photon Torpedos, and Disruptor Beams.

Throughout Shattered Universe the emphasis is constantly on explosive, arcade-style combat. It's also easy to pick up and play, meaning that you don't need to be a lifelong Star Trek fan, fluent in Klingon, in order to enjoy it.
