Summary

Empire’s 2000 release of Ford Racing proved to be a surprise hit for the PC platform, even more so because it limited gamers driving to a single breed of car. And now its sequel is ready, three years later, with more of the same and a whole plethora of goodies and gameplay tweaks.

In some respects, Ford Racing 2 could be deemed to be Gran Turismo exclusively featuring Ford cars. It does limit players in what they drive, but in terms of gameplay, design and circuits, it’s nearly as comprehensive as Polyphony’s offering.

Altogether, Ford Racing 2 offers 32 Ford models, including the GT40, F-150, SVT Mustang Cobra, Focus Rally and '49 Coupe. But, like in nearly every other racing game, many of them must be earned by completing races and set challenges.

There’s also a fine selection of varied racing circuits to choose from that cater for every breed of Ford car. There are off-road races, jungle races, street races and even desert stages, all of which can be raced in a variety of game modes such as Duel, Racing Line and Elimination. And in an attempt to give the game a greater focus on arcade racing, developer Razorworks has implemented pick-up-and-play handling physics, which should appeal even to the most casual of gamers.

Razorworks has also done a grand job with in-game graphics. Ford Racing 2 boasts brilliantly detailed cars, convincing racing locales and good shadow and weather effects. It’s not quite Gran Turismo, but it’s a great game nonetheless.
