Exclusive to GameCube, the first WWE Day of Reckoning was probably the best wrestling game to be published by THQ. And thats saying something, as the company have been responsible for a whole slew of wrestling entertainment games on various platforms, and have positioned themselves as the home of videogame wrestling titles.
The first WWEDOR challenged you to grapple your way to the very top of the sport entertainment tree, starting out as the equivalent of a backyard wrestler and suplexing your way to the baubled bikinis and leopardskin leotards at the top of the WWE. Day of Reckoning 2 picks up pretty much where the last game left off. Having proven yourself and taken the WWE crown on, you lose it and must begin a fight to regain your honour and credibility. Over the years, the ongoing soap opera that is WWE has focused more and more on what goes on outside the ring. Day of Reckoning 2 promises an equally involved storyline, with backstabbing and vengeance leaving you unsure of where your so-called friends loyalties lie if they even have any. High quality cut-scenes make for some excellent theatre, but the meat of the game lies in the gameplay as ever.
The submission system has been improved on since last time, and now you can choose from a number of unique strategies for completing a submission successfully. Get it right and gloat as you watch your opponent tap the canvas in pain and shame. A new stamina system gives each player new endurance capabilities.
Plenty of your favourite stars from past and present WWE appear in the roster, including the Undertaker, JBL, Kurt Angle, Shelton Benjamin, Booker T, Rey Mysterio, Rick Flair, The Hurricane, Hulk Hogan, Brett Hart and The Rock. There are female wrestlers too, with Christy Hemme, Stacy Keibler and Torrie Wilson all putting in appearances. The roster is truly enormous, and if you have a favourite current WWE wrestler then theyre sure to be in there. A quick match mode allows you to take on these stars, or even play as them. A slamming sequel to the hugely successful Day of Reckoning, the second in the series hasnt come a moment too soon.
