Summary

If you've spent many a happy childhood (or adulthood) hour up in the attic, poring over a model train set to get everything as close to realistic as you can, Electronic Arts has a treat in store for you with Rail Simulator. Where could you get a more extensive rail experience (short of actual rail travel, of course) than in a modern PC? It'll certainly save you a small fortune on fake plastic trees...

The spiritual successor to Microsoft Train Simulator (the same development team worked on the game) - Rail Simulator offers up a massively customisable experience. Players will be able to arrange their own control set up that even goes as far as requiring the right amount of brake pressure before you set off using hot keys, so driving will be closer than ever to the real thing.

Similarly, the landscape of the five European train lines along which you can travel is all there for you to play with. Players can add stations, buildings, people, trees and a host of other features to give each track a unique feel. If you want to go even further, players can even create their own objects in programmes such as 3D Studio Max and import them into the game. Alternatively, if you're not quite that dab a hand with design (or maybe a bit too lazy) you can wait for others to do the work sit back to reap the rewards.

Suddenly that attic's starting to look a tad draughty...
