Summary

Unreal Anthology is a bargain bundle containing four titles from Epic's much-admired series of shooters. The original is present, of course, accompanied by the Game of the Year Edition, Unreal II The Awakening and UT2004.

The gameplay of Unreal Tournament is split into four main categories. Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Domination and Challenge. Deathmatch is a straight forward kill or be killed scenario where it's the first player to reach the limit who wins. Capture the Flag is where you must venture into the other teams base and steal there precious flag, if you make it back to your base alive and you flag is still there, you score a point. Capture the flag is heavily team based where communication is of vital importance, you must balance your tactics between scouting and defending.

Domination is another team based rule variation where your team has to be the first to reach a set points level. In Domination there are three icons which will award you points if you turn them to your colour. If two or more of the icons are your colour you will gain a higher percentage of the point total and that will ensure your victory. Domination is a great game because you are informed of which icon has been changed and whereabouts on the level it is. You then make your way there as fast as possible and if you win the showdown, you can retake it. The Challenge mode are extremely hard one on one matches with the computer. You will need full health, armour, a few decent weapons and good aiming to stand a chance in the challenge mode.

UT: Game of the Year is an enhanced version of the original that adds a little longevity to the proceedings.

Set in the same universe as the 1998 original, but following a brand new story and with a new cast of characters, Unreal II casts the player 300 years into the future - to the origins of mankind's expansion into space.

Players take on the role of John Dalton - ex-Marine and Marshal of the Terran Colonial Authority - who discovers a chilling distress signal during one of his regular patrols. Upon investigating, Dalton is subsequently plunged into harsh combat with terrifying enemies, and into a conflict that will determine the fate of the galaxy. That's right folks - you are humanity's only hope for salvation.

As the game pans out, the story throws up an array of intense combat missions, which are linked in the usual way by various sections of scripted narrative. Each of the missions features a different tactical situation, such as a hostage rescue, a civilian escort and an assault on an enemy base, and each takes place across a variety of different environments. Locales such as the jungles of a tropical planet, the barren ice of a frozen moon, and the active, living tunnels of an underground world are just a few of the settings in which players fight for their lives.

UT 2004 does more than merely build on previous instalments. It throws an absolute mass of new features into the mix, not least including the likes of a new hyper-charged Onslaught mode and, more interestingly, the introduction of vehicles, Halo-style. It would be a severe injustice to omit any single addition found in UT2004, so scan down a little to feast your eyes on the full nitty-gritty.

At the core, the game continues in similar vein, with you suiting up as the ultimate techno-gladiator of the future and battling it out with up to 32 other players in action-packed, frag-filled arenas. Of course, there's a host of new maps for all the established game modes, including Capture the Flag, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Bombing Run and Double Domination, as well as all new arenas for the new styles of play. In addition, the game contains all of the maps, mutators and game types - such as Mutant, Last Man Standing and Invasion - from UT2003, as well as all its free downloadable bonus packs.
