Summary

The third instalment in Konami's Castlevania series to hit the Nintendo DS is upon us, with longtime Castlevania developer Koji Igarashi having opened up new avenues for the franchise to explore.

Seasoned fans of the series need to be ready to be taken out of their comfort zones, as change is in the air. For starters, the Belmont clan is out of it. There's not a whiff of Richter, Julius, or Simon, with Alucard not taking a central role in the game and Morris not around to pick up some of the slack. Also absent is the Vampire Killer whip.

There's a reason for all this, of course. Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia takes place after Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, during a period when the Belmonts were absent. Without them around, new organisations have arisen to research countermeasures against Dracula's return. The most promising is Order of Ecclesia and its magic glyphs, and it's as a member of this group that you play.

The glyphs in question play a key role in the gameplay. Collecting them as they progress through the game, players can create up to 100 different attack combinations as they arm themselves with them. The title follows the 2D style of previous handheld Castlevania games, but opens up more outdoor locations than are traditionally seen in the series.

Players who want to get connected can choose to compete head-to-head or trade items they've acquired while exploring the different environments.

This is definitely one for the hardcore, but if you're a seasoned Castlevania fan, you're likely to love it.
