Trine is an innovative, yet strangely familiar, platform/puzzle game. Players control one of three different characters in order to complete the puzzles and defeat the opponents that attempt to prevent you from reaching the end of the level. The levels, enemies and characters have full interaction with the environment, using a realistic physics model. The three playable characters are Pontius: a knight, who has melee combat skills, Zoya: a thief who can take part in ranged combat, and Amadeus: a wizard. The wizard is a non-combat character, but he has the ability to create objects through conjury, and these objects, boxes, planks etc can often be vital to completing a puzzle.

Pontius can also lift and throw heavy objects, and use his shield to defend against attacks. Zoya can also use a rope to swing across gaps of the level, and to climb up and down to higher and lower sections.

The game features a unique co-operative play feature, enabling players to join in and drop out at any time. Only by combining the abilities of each character can you overcome obstacles in innovative ways and complete certain puzzles and sections of each level. If you are playing in one-player mode, you can swap between characters at any time, to enable you to access the mix of skills required.

The resulting game is like a combination of Lost Vikings and Little Big Planet, all wrapped up in gorgeous looking graphics. There is often more than one way of tackling any problem, and the game rewards innovation and lateral thinking.
