Summary

A long, long time ago, when video gaming was in its infancy, the entertainment of choice generally involved walking from left to right whilst hitting/shooting baddies. One of the more accomplished of such titles - and one that is still fondly remembered today - was Rygar. Rygar saw players take on the role of a pumped-up, pant-wearing hero as he traversed a vast array of forests, rivers and caves, on the quest to kick seven bells out of an assortment of grisly monsters. Developer Tecmo at some point must have decided that the adventure must live on and subsequently brought a remake to the PlayStation 2, complete with the pre-requisite 3D makeover. Huzzah! Not content with taking the game to the Sony audience, however, the PS2 version of Rygar has been dusted off for the modern, motion-control-loving Wii audience.

Taking place on an island in the Mediterranean Sea called Argus, Rygar: The Battle of Argus, tells the tale of a noble warrior determined to save the Princess Harmonia and bring the Island of Argus back to a state of peace. After ravenous monsters, known as 'Titans' abducted the princess, hero Rygar was subsequently swallowed up by a mysterious underworld. From here he must embark on his quest, travelling across various unique worlds, whilst laying waste to hordes of enemies such as Cyclops, Minotaurs and Chimeras.

The weapon of choice from the original 1986 arcade game, the Diskarmor, makes a return. It is, essentially, a spiked shield on a chain. Now, however, you'll be controlling it with the Wii Remote, meaning it will be a question of swinging your arms in your attempts to decapitate beasts of myth.

There's a spot of light platforming and puzzle solving spread across Battle of Argus, but don't expect it to hold you up for too long as you go about the real business of the game - hacking and slashing your way through hordes of monsters.

New to the Wii version is Gladiator Mode, in which you'll be able to put the Wii controls to the test. In a nutshell, you stand on a platform dealing out death to ever-advancing armies of enemies, really giving the combat mechanics a chance to shine.
