Summary

If you like games where you have to think or have to do the unthinkable, Thief is the kind of series for you.

Thief is a stealth game where you assume the role of one of the least noble professions. Thief is essentially a first-person shooter, but the emphasis is not on all out killing, as is usual case in the genre. In this title you will have to develop an undercover strategy and stick closely to the shadows.

If you decide take the training option, Thief will gently lift you into the gameplay. You will learn how to be covert. Sticking to the dark areas of the screen to avoid detection is most important. You have a gauge that determines how visible you are, so keep this empty as much as possible. Your footsteps make different noises if you running or moving over noisy surfaces. You will also learn various skills like the art of sword fighting, archery, and how to interact with your environment. You can even pickpocket keys off guards to aid your burglary attempts.

Next up is the sequel, The Metal Age. The stealth aspect of Thief 2 plays a huge part in your survival against the huge numbers of sword-bearing guards. Thanks to the “Enhanced Dark Engine,” you're able to use a crystal that can be used as an indicator, telling to how well hidden you are. While this may appear to be a simple attribute, the calculations needed to accurately incorporate this feature are quite complex, and should be given credit. You will need a very sensible approach to this game if you are to succeed. You need to be patient, be adaptive to the conditions surrounding you, and be prepared to find other solutions to the problems given to you. Stealing is also of relative importance here. If you are to survive, then you must lurk around, pocketing any cash you might find on your travels. You are after all, a thief.

In the third chapter of Thief, players once again assume control of Garrett. He might be a super-thief who makes a living in a dark and foreboding city by preying on the wealthy, but he's not all bad. In this particular outing, he's seeking a means to prevent a new Dark Age. But his attempts to do so inadvertently give way to a new evil, and so a new adventure begins.

It's a good tale, but as a hardcore stealth adventure, gameplay is paramount. And truthfully speaking, Deadly Shadows excels in its ability to deliver a thoroughly involving and mentally taxing adventure. From the very beginning, Deadly Shadows sets players in a dark and moody game world, littered with seemingly impossible objectives and myriad guards that must be avoided at all costs. Even the game's tutorial is something of a challenge, but it's one that needs to be completed if players are to stand a chance in the game proper.
