Summary
Get the Top Gun theme out of your head - the real place for tense and spectacular aerial dogfights is the world of Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. After attempting to bring the franchise into the real world and some peculiar choices involving quicktime events for the last entry in the series, Assault Horizon, the Ace Combat series is back in more familiar territory with its alternate world setting, unrealistically over-armed fighter jets, military melodrama and the occasional sci-fi superweapon.
In this outing you're part of a penal squadron, a group trying to pay back its debts to society by using billion dollar hardware to shoot other billion dollar hardware out of the sky. You'll be flying cutting edge near-future in intense battles against the backdrop of an epic storyline.
Skies Unknown is built on Unreal Engine 4 and the team over at Project Aces has used it to create phot-realistic environments that involve changing weather, detailed cityscapes and even dynamically-generated clouds!
If you prefer, you can take the action online for multiplayer dogfights for up to eight pilots. There are 28 different aircraft to choose from, with up to 100 enhanced parts and weapons as well as a bunch of emblems and nicknames to customise your plane. During online matches the player in the lead will have a 'bounty' put on their heads that means extra points if you manage to shoot them down, ratcheting the tension up even further.
