Summary

Utawarerumono: ZAN is an interesting idea. It's the latest game in the Utawarerumono series that basically tells the story of the first game, Mask of Deception, but drops the strategy and visual novel style of gameplay in favour of hack and slash mechanics that are closer to muso games such as the Dynasty Warriors series.

That means fast and furious action as you follow the story of Haku, a man with no memories, and the devastating conflict that runs amok in the land he calls home. You'll have 12 legendary heroes to master, each with their own strengths and abilities, as you slice dice and smash your way through your legions of foes. As you progress and level up you'll get the opportunity to equip scrolls, which will either give your stats a handy boost or grant buffs.

Alongside the core story mode, there are plenty of other ways to sink time into Utawarerumono Zan in the form of replayable missions, sub missions, free missions and online missions. It might not quite have the heft of Mask of Deception's 40+ hours of story, but it certainly doesn't short change you. With an online multiplayer mode for up to four players, there's a lot of meat to sink your teeth into here.

If previous outings of the Utawarerumono series caught your eye but the visual novel genre never grabbed you (and let's be honest, there are a few western gamers who fall into that category) then this is your way in.
