Core Design was founded in 1988 by Jeremy Smith and a group of colleagues who had all worked at Gremlin Interactive. In the beginning there were only 8 employees at Core, after 10 years there were 80.
The company's first game was "Rick Dangerous" which went on to be European Game of the Year. More hits followed with games like Jaguar XJ220, Chuck Rock and Fighting Force.
Core was acquired by the CentreGold group in 1994. However, it retained its autonomy within the group. Core also retained its independent nature when the CentreGold group was acquired by the Eidos group in 1996.
Soon after the Eidos acquisition, Core released what would turn out to be its most famous game. Tomb Raider was an instant hit on Sega Saturn, Sony Playstation and the PC, catapulting its star, Lara Croft, to worldwide cult icon status. After Tomb Raider came Ninja: Shadow of Darkness, as well as the inevitable Tomb Raider II, III, IV (Last Revelation), V (Chronicles) and a host of 2D outings for GameBoy and iTV.
Core's first work that SPOnG is aware of is the 1989 title, "Rick Dangerous" (Amiga).
The company has been involved titles released on the PC, Wii, PS2, Power Mac, PSP, Xbox, GBA, PlayStation, Game Boy Color, Dreamcast, Saturn, Sega Megadrive, SNES, Amiga, Amiga AGA, CD32, ST, Sega MegaCD, Sega Master System, Oric, C64, Spectrum 48K, Sinclair Spectrum 128K and Amstrad CPC. Of these, "Tomb Raider II" (PC), "Tomb Raider" (PC), "Tomb Raider III" (PC), "Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation" (Dreamcast), "Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation" (PC) has been a best selling title.
The company's most recent involvement was on the 2009 release "Tomb Raider: The Greatest Raids" (PC).
