Summary

Anno 1503 blends an empire-building god sim with a real-time strategy game. The sequel to the award-winning, best-selling progressive strategy game Anno 1602, this title casts the player as a young man about to venture into the unfamiliar lands of the Renaissance world in 1503 AD.

The game begins with the player setting sail for the New World in order to establish a new nation and empire, whilst seeking wealth and power. Play takes place across vast, detailed environments, set within four various climate zones, and involves competing and interacting with computer-controlled opponents. Comprising nine different cultures, such as Africans, Aztecs, Native Americans, these adversaries each have their own unique traits and characteristics.

A key element to the game is the goods trading component, which, at certain stages throughout the game, is the only viable way forward. The various different climates are each in possession of their own unique natural resources such as food, clothing, spices and minerals, and, in most cases, trades can be made in order to interact with other races and form allegiances. Some cultures can rely on more aggressive methods of interaction, however.

The combat dynamic of Anno 1503 is the main focus of the game. The real-time strategy based combat system means that the player must make educated decisions and apply the appropriate strategy in order to succeed, advance their nation and build their empire.
