Summary

It seems that someone somewhere has decided that dominating the world's media (not to mention toys, t-shirts, breakfast cereal and wallpaper) merely once is not enough and so, over 14 years on, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back in the limelight. A new-look TV series looks set to kick things off and, as happened originally, Konami is on hand to supply us with the accompanying video game. One week on from the game's PS2 debut and the GameCube version hits the shelves.

Apart from the obvious visual and dimensional advancements, not much has changed from Konami's original beat-em-up, at least with regard to the game's concept. It's all simple stuff, with you assuming the role of your favourite Turtle and once again taking on Shredder's evil Foot Clan with only your ninja-enhanced limbs and favourite weapon to rely on.

As mentioned before, the new visual style means that everything is now in full 3D and also benefits from the now common cel-shading effect. As far as the gameplay is concerned, it's all unrelenting beat-em-up action against an onslaught of kung fu-fighting foes, with the inclusion of some rather huge end level bosses taken from the new TV show. Obviously teamwork is the best way forward, so it's definitely a good idea to take advantage of the game's two-player co-op mode, which allows you to play through with one of your mates.

Although the gameplay is generally of an old-school disposition, TMNT does also boast some modern day beat-em-up elements. As such, an intuitive 'Combo' feature lies at the core of the action, which allows you to string up to 30 consecutive moves together and unleash the resulting barrage onto your opponents. The game also features a huge number of collectible items used to unlock additional moves and previously hidden features.
